Kiwiana Publication Design

This project investigates the Kiwiana aesthetic in order to create visual messages
that can function as an experience of escaping from adult life to an imaginarium place of childhood. A nostalgic Kiwiana escape to childhood, using graphic language in a
printed and assembled experience of imagery and icons relevant to my New Zealand youth. With the responsibility and stress of adulthood being newly faced I was personally
inspired to create a project that reflected a time of happiness and childish fun,
as a provided form of escapism for others to enjoy.

“Childish” is a printed book and set of puzzles that visually communicate the imagery
I relate to kiwi childhood, from the places I have been, the toys I have played with, and the food I have eaten. All are presented in a form of a time capsule/box that creates an immersive experience for the viewer. The relevance lies in its efforts to contribute
to the challenges in our society of mental ill-health and stress-related conditions
that we can identify as emerging adults. (Sjöblom, 2019) Through graphic
design, this project will communicate a sense of togetherness through sharing,
learning, and feeling joy, prompted by the pleasantly nostalgic kiwi
childhood-inspired imagery.
